Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.
In 2021, as we heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are inspired to think creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

Reading Like A Writer
This week we are trying something new – TALK TO THE AUTHOR. This strategy can be used to unpack thinking pre-writing or to assist with comprehension of texts.
Procedure
- Read, listen and watch the lyrics below to the song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon.
- Reflecting on the lyric sentences or phrases, comment, ask questions or sketch your thinking as if you are talking to the author. Now because the author isn’t available, these comments, questions and drawings need to be written alongside the text.
- When commenting the responses can be written or drawn in visual pictures to represent thinking. Students are to respond in a way that demonstrates their deep thinking about the text.
