Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality, or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.

Plant The Seed - Unpack Your Thinking

When we think about social justice and the connection to our world there are actually four SDGs that we can connect with.

  1. SDG 1 – No Poverty
  2. SDG 5 – Gender Equality
  3. SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.
  4. SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities

This week the Visual Thinking Routine we will learn about and explore is Claim, Support, Question.

We want our writers to think about being changemakers, creators of a movement. You see when we join together the world can conquer those that challenge social justice. As you listen to this week’s mentor text and a captivating TED Talk we want you to make a claim, support your opinion and ask any questions that still fill your mind.

Here are your visual thinking prompts to unpack your thinking:

Make a claim (opinion) about this notion that one person can start a movement, can change the world: Explain or interpret what starting a movement is or what being a changemaker is.

Identify support for your claim: Things you see, feel, and know that support your claim (opinion). Ask a question related to your claim

Question: What’s left hanging? What isn’t explained? What new reasons does your claim (opinion) raise?

Let’s listen to this week’s mentor text – I Am One: A Book of Action by Susan Verde and the TED Talk by Derek Sivers: To Start A Movement.

Here is my thinking – Bronwyn Joyce Creator of The Global Write

How do I make a difference? Beautiful things start with one.

One ……

One…….

One……    and so on.

Remember to finish your story in a way that captures your message.

Or

How do I start a movement? ………..

Remember to nurture your first few followers as equals and it’s clearly about the movement not you.

Talk To Our ARTIST Olivia

Can you explain the meaning behind Olivia’s image this week? She has taken her inspiration from her own thoughts of what social justice represents. She would love to hear your thoughts about what her image signifies. Send here a message on her Wakelet and I am sure she will leave you a reply.
