Recover and Revitalize Education

International Day of Education

24 January, 2021

In the wake of the current pandemic, education all over the world has been interrupted at a catastrophic level. We have seen schools closed and programmes disrupted. The UN has estimated that 1.9 Billion students have had their learning affected. As we move into a new year it is time to join together through collaboration and ignite learning again.

This week here at ‘The Global Write’ we will focus on how precious education is and the importance of achieving SDG 4 by 2030 so there is quality education for all.

Plant The Seed - Unpack Your Thinking

To begin our thinking this week we are going to brainstorm using sketchnoting to identify the power of education.

Sketchnoting is ……….

I wonder, have you heard of the ‘School Under the Bridge’? It is a magical place in Delhi, India giving all students the opportunity to learn. Read the article together and watch the video and find out more:

Now you have watched the video create a sketchnote using the following prompt questions:

What did the video tell you about the people who volunteer at the school? Why is this school so important to the students?

Explain your thoughts about the school, should there be more in the world? Why or Why not?

Here is my sketchnote as an example.

IMPORTANT: Teachers take a photo of your students sketchnotes and post them to ‘The Global Write’ Wakelet.

Let's Write

Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 265 million children and adolescents around the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable.

Listen to Cameron Allen’s KIDS TED Talk

Prompt 1 :

To achieve quality education for all children the world needs to …..

Prompt 2:

All children have the right to an education because….

Write a letter using Buncee, create a TED Talk Flipgrid Video or be creative by reaching out to the World’s Leaders explaining why all children in the world should have access to an education. Persuade them by providing suggestions on how the world could make this happen just like Cameron Allen did.
